What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is the shooting, burning, or numbing pain that travels from your lower back down through your hip, glute, and leg, and for most people, it doesn't come from one single injury. It comes from irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, often caused by a disc under too much load, an overactive piriformis, or movement patterns that put uneven stress on your spine over time.

Because the underlying cause is usually mechanical, sciatica tends to come back after passive treatments wear off. If the muscles and movement habits compressing the nerve are never retrained, the irritation returns, even after the pain temporarily fades.

Have You Tried Everything for Your Sciatica?

Many of our patients come to us after months of trying to manage sciatica on their own, stretching, icing, over-the-counter medication, maybe a few sessions of standard chiropractic or physical therapy. Some found short-term relief. Others didn't feel a difference at all.

That's common. Passive treatments like adjustments-alone, e-stim, or decompression tables can calm an irritated nerve for a little while, but they don't address why the nerve is being compressed in the first place. If the movement dysfunction driving the compression is never corrected, the pain keeps finding its way back.

Our Approach to Treating Sciatica

At Chiro Haus, we start with a full movement assessment to find exactly what's compressing or irritating your sciatic nerve, whether that's a stiff hip, an overactive piriformis, a disc issue, or a compensation pattern built up over months or years.

Our appointments are a full hour, split between hands-on care and rehab in our gym space, using the same deadlift rack and squat setup we use with our athletic patients. We're not a "pop and go" clinic. Dr. Anna Hoang, DC and Dr. Jonathan Chapa, DC (both SFMA/FMS providers, with Dr. Chapa FAKTR certified) build a plan specific to your movement dysfunction, not a generic sciatica protocol.

Between visits, our hybrid model keeps you supported through the TrueCoach app, with video feedback on your home exercises within 24 hours, so progress doesn't stop when you leave the clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Sciatica usually comes from a mechanical cause, like a disc, a tight piriformis, or a movement compensation, that rehab-focused chiropractic care is well suited to address. We combine hands-on care with movement retraining to relieve the compression causing your symptoms, not just calm them temporarily.
It depends on how long the compression has been present and what's driving it. Many patients notice initial improvement within the first few weeks, with fuller relief building as we retrain the underlying movement pattern. Because we're addressing the cause, results tend to hold rather than fade.
Yes. Athletes often develop sciatica-like symptoms from training-related compensation, like a deadlift or squat pattern that loads the low back and hip incorrectly. We find the specific movement dysfunction driving it and correct it using the same gym space we use for rehab, then support you between sessions through the TrueCoach app so you can stay active while you recover.

Yes. Pregnancy and postpartum sciatica is common, driven by postural shifts, loosened ligaments, and added load on the spine. Dr. Anna Hoang, DC is Webster Technique certified and a BirthFit coach, and builds care around what's safe and effective at each stage, from pregnancy through postpartum recovery.
