Taking that first step to book an appointment takes courage — especially when you're a new mom juggling everything at once, running low on sleep, and genuinely unsure whether what you're feeling is "worth" getting checked out.

It is worth it. And we want you to feel completely at ease walking through our doors. So here's exactly what your first postpartum visit at CHIRO HAUS looks like — from the moment you arrive to the plan we build together before you leave.

No surprises. No rushing. Just you, your doctor, and a clear path forward.

Before You Arrive

We want your first visit to feel easy — not like another errand on an already full plate. Here's how to prepare:

What to bring / what to wear
Comfortable, moveable clothing — we'll be asking you to move through some basic patterns, so leggings and a top you can reach overhead in works great
Your baby is welcome — we're a mom-friendly clinic. If you need to nurse, feed, or tend to your baby during the visit, please do. We'll work around you
Any relevant records — if you had a complicated delivery, C-section, or any imaging done, it's helpful (but never required) to bring those along
Arrive 5–10 minutes early — we'll have a short intake form for you to complete before your appointment begins
Come as you are — you don't need to have done anything special to prepare. We meet you exactly where you are
You don't need to have your symptoms figured out before you come in. You don't need to know the "right" words to describe what you're feeling. That's our job — and it's what we love to do.
Your Intake Conversation

Your first visit begins with a real conversation — not a clipboard of forms handed to you in a waiting room. You'll sit down with your doctor (at CHIRO HAUS, that's always 1-on-1, never a technician or assistant) and we'll simply talk.

We want to understand your full picture — not just the pain. We'll ask about:

Your delivery story — vaginal or cesarean, any complications, how long labor was, whether you had tearing or instrumental delivery. All of this affects how your body is recovering.
Where and when you hurt — what makes it better, what makes it worse, whether it's constant or comes and goes, whether it started during pregnancy or after delivery.
Your daily life right now — how you feed your baby, whether you're babywearing, how your sleep is, what your activity level looks like, and what you're hoping to get back to.
Your goals — whether that's getting through the day without pain, returning to running, going back to CrossFit or HYROX, or simply being able to pick up your baby without wincing.

This conversation typically takes about 15 minutes. We listen carefully, ask follow-up questions, and make sure we understand not just your symptoms but your life — because that context shapes everything that comes next.

The Movement Screen (SFMA)

This is where CHIRO HAUS is different from most chiropractic offices — and it's the part our patients find most eye-opening.

Rather than going straight to the area that hurts, we start by looking at how your whole body moves. We use a clinical assessment called the Selective Functional Movement Assessment — the SFMA — to evaluate seven fundamental movement patterns: how you bend, rotate, reach, squat, and balance.

This matters because pain in one place is almost never caused by a problem in that exact same place. A postpartum mom with lower back pain might actually have a hip mobility restriction that's forcing her lumbar spine to compensate. Or a pelvic floor coordination issue. Or a thoracic stiffness pattern from months of nursing posture. The SFMA helps us identify the actual root cause — not just chase the symptom.

What the SFMA looks like in practice
We'll ask you to perform simple movements — reaching overhead, bending forward, squatting, rotating — while we observe
Each pattern is rated as functional or dysfunctional, and painful or pain-free
We then break down the dysfunctional patterns to find exactly where the movement is breaking down and why
The result is a clear, specific picture of what your body actually needs — not a guess based on where it hurts
Most of our patients tell us this is the first time anyone has looked at them as a whole moving body rather than a collection of painful parts. That's exactly the point.
Your First Treatment

Once we understand what's going on, we get to work — right there in that first session. You won't leave with just a piece of paper and a follow-up appointment weeks away. You'll receive hands-on care the same day.

Depending on what the movement screen reveals, your first treatment may include a combination of:

Chiropractic adjustments — specific, gentle mobilization of the joints that are restricted or not moving well. For postpartum moms this often includes the lumbar spine, sacroiliac joints, pelvis, and sometimes the thoracic spine and hips. We always explain what we're doing and why before we do it, and we never adjust anything without your full understanding and consent.
Soft tissue work — hands-on release of the muscles and fascia that have been overworking or compensating. This might include the hip flexors, piriformis, glutes, thoracolumbar fascia, or the muscles around your SI joints — whatever the screen identifies as contributing to your pain.
Corrective exercise in-session — we'll often introduce one or two targeted movements right there in the treatment room. These are specific to what your screen revealed and designed to begin retraining the patterns that are contributing to your pain.
Education — we'll explain exactly what we found, what it means, and what the plan is. You'll leave your first visit knowing more about what's happening in your body than you did when you walked in. We believe that understanding is part of healing.

A first visit at CHIRO HAUS typically runs 45–60 minutes. We never feel rushed, and neither should you.

Your TrueCoach Home Program

Before you leave, we'll set you up with a home program through TrueCoach — a platform we use to deliver personalized exercise programming directly to your phone.

This isn't a generic PDF of exercises. It's a specific, progressive program built around what your movement screen revealed and what your body needs right now. Each exercise comes with video demonstrations so you know exactly how to do it — and how it should feel.

What TrueCoach gives you
A personalized exercise program on your phone — accessible any time, anywhere
Video demos for every movement so you never have to guess
Direct messaging with your doctor if you have questions between visits
Programs that evolve as you progress — not the same exercises on repeat forever
The accountability and structure to keep making progress between visits — not just during them
Most postpartum programs start with just 2–3 exercises done in 10 minutes or less. We know your time is not your own right now. We design around that, not around an ideal that doesn't match your life.
What Happens After Your First Visit

Before you leave, we'll have an honest conversation about what we found and what we recommend. We'll outline a care plan that makes sense for where you are — not a rigid schedule that doesn't fit your life.

For most postpartum patients, we typically recommend:

Weeks 1–3: More frequent visits (2x/week) to build momentum, reduce pain, and establish your movement baseline. This is when most patients notice the most rapid change.
Weeks 4–8: Reduced frequency (1x/week or every other week) as your pain decreases and your movement quality improves. Your TrueCoach program takes on more of the load.
Beyond that: Discharge or maintenance care based on your goals. Our aim is always to get you to a place where you don't need us — not to keep you coming indefinitely.

Most of our postpartum patients notice meaningful improvement within the first 3–4 visits. Full resolution — including return to exercise, lifting, and whatever activities you love — typically takes 6–10 weeks, depending on how long symptoms have been present and what's driving them.

We will never pressure you into a care plan that doesn't feel right. We give you our honest clinical recommendation — and then we respect your decision. You are always in charge of your own care.
Your Questions, Answered
How soon after delivery can I come in?

For vaginal deliveries, gentle chiropractic care can begin as early as a few days after birth, depending on how you're feeling. For C-sections, we typically wait until your incision has begun to heal — usually around 4–6 weeks — though we can still see you earlier for upper back and neck work if needed. You don't need to wait for your 6-week OB clearance to come in for an initial assessment.

Is it safe to get adjusted while breastfeeding?

Absolutely. Chiropractic adjustments are completely safe while breastfeeding. We factor your breastfeeding status into the positioning and techniques we use — for example, we'll always offer prone positioning alternatives if lying on your stomach is uncomfortable. If you need to nurse your baby during the appointment, please do. We've seen it all and we'll simply keep going.

Will the adjustment hurt?

Chiropractic adjustments are not painful — though you may feel some temporary soreness afterward, similar to how your muscles feel after a good workout. We always use the gentlest effective technique, especially in the early postpartum period when tissues are still healing. We'll check in with you throughout and adjust our approach based on your feedback.

What if I had a C-section?

C-section recovery is something we address thoughtfully and specifically at CHIRO HAUS. We include scar tissue assessment and mobilization as part of our postpartum evaluation — because the fascial changes from a C-section directly affect how load transfers through your core and lower back, and addressing that scar is often a missing piece for moms who aren't improving with other approaches.

I'm months (or years) postpartum — is it too late?

Never. We see moms at every stage — 6 weeks, 6 months, 3 years out. The body responds remarkably well to the right input regardless of how long the issue has been present. The approach may look slightly different for a mom who is 2 years postpartum versus 2 months, but the fundamental process — assess, treat, program, progress — is the same.

Do you see both mom and baby?

Yes! We also offer pediatric chiropractic care for newborns and infants at CHIRO HAUS. Many families find it convenient to bring both mom and baby in together. If you're interested in having your baby evaluated as well, just let us know when you book and we'll set aside time for both of you.
